This year’s Newbery Medal was awarded to Susan Patron for The Higher Power of Lucky. Illustrator David Wiesner won the Caldecott for Flotsam.

Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel American Born Chinese won the Printz Award, a newer prize for books in the young adult category.
